The students that tested these objects found that the plastic items floated and the metal items sunk. They observe that ships are metal and yet they float. The orange floated with the peal and sunk without it. They hypothesized that the pealing had air in it to make it float. Without the pealing the orange is "thicker". Actually without the pealing it is more dense. The Tablespoon of Oil floats because the oil is more dense than the water.
